The Great Gatehouse and adjoining courthouse dates from 1338 but was largely rebuilt in the 16th century. During the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1538 the Abbey was virtually destroyed under the order of King Henry VIII. After this the site was given to Sir Anthony Browne, Henry VIII's friend and Master of the Horse who created a country house on the site. The site has since been used as an all-girls boarding school, a billet for Canadian troops during WWII and currently a tourist attraction along with an independent boarding school.
To log this cache. Standing between the black sign post and the black lamp post at the given coordinates please provide a picture, attached to your log, that includes the following criteria: 1) a personal item or yourself must be featured in the photo (face not required) and 2) the Abbey Gatehouse is visible in the background.
