Geocache Description:

This Virtual reward cache can be found at St Helen's Oratory, Cape Cornwall, a couple of miles West from St Just.

A cape is the point of land where two bodies of water meet. Cape Cornwall is one of only two capes in the United Kingdom, the other being Cape Wrath in North West Scotland.

Most of the headland is owned by the National Trust. The National Coastwatch has a look-out on the seaward side. The only tourist infrastructure at present is a car park (owned by the National Trust - parking charges apply), public toilets, and a refreshments counter during the summer.

St Helen's Oratory - Cape Cornwall.

On the eastern side of the Cape is the tiny chapel known as St Helen's Oratory. The field in which it lies is called Park an Chapel (field of the chapel).  Unfortunately very little now remains of this small early Christian chapel.

Evidence suggests that the site dates back to the Romano-Christian period, maybe around 4 AD, but it is possible that it was also once an Iron Age settlement.

An ancient cross with a chi-rho monogram was discovered on the site in the mid-19th Century, but was sadly lost. The cross, which is now cemented on to it, is apparently, not the original, but one which was found lying nearby.

St Helen's Oratory is protected as a monument of national importance under the ancient monuments acts  1913 - 53, by the Department of the Environment.
