Geocache Description:

This Virtual Cache was created in partnership with Geocaching HQ to highlight Northwest Trolls: Way of the Bird King, a public art exhibit presented by Scan Design Foundation. The exhibit features six trolls designed by Danish recycling artist Thomas Dambo with support from his team of master builders and many volunteers.

The publicly-accessible sculptures are located around the Pacific Northwest where each whimsical troll sculpture is part of an underlying environmental story. The project celebrates the human experience of art by amplifying the connections of cultural heritage between Coast Salish tribal communities and Scandinavian traditions.

Known internationally for large-scale public art installations made from recycled materials, Dambo’s vision is to create art that inspires people to get outside to explore, have adventures, and protect our natural spaces. He also hopes visitors to his sculptures will leave with an appreciation for how trash can be turned into treasure.

This Virtual Cache will bring you to Vashon-Maury Island where you’ll find Oscar the Bird King!

Please help us protect Oscar’s habitat by visiting during daylight hours, adhering to posted signage and staying on marked trails.

Logging Requirements

In order to claim this Virtual Cache, please include a photo of yourself with Oscar the Bird King in your log. Photos featuring friends and family, pets, or a personal item will also be accepted.

Logs that do not fulfill this requirement may be deleted.

About the Northwest Trolls

Northwest Trolls: Way of the Bird King is a public art exhibit presented by Scan Design Foundation, whose mission is to support Danish-American relations with a focus on environmental sustainability. Thanks to funding partners and host site partners, there is no admission fee to visit any of the trolls.

To learn more, visit Vashon Troll or read about Geocaching Adventures at the Northwest Trolls

NOTE: This exhibit launched in summer 2023. By virtue of the recycled materials, the Northwest Trolls are intended to be temporary installations for the public to enjoy for several years. Each site partner has committed to hosting the sculptures for a minimum of three years. This virtual will remain active as long as Oscar is available to visit on Vashon-Maury Island.

This Virtual Reward Cache was created in collaboration with HQ’s Business Development team.
