A Cache Event in Cache, OK!

Cache, OK is a town of approximately 2,500 people in the SW corner of Comanche County.  Named for nearby West Cache Creek, Cache is approximately an hour drive from Wichita Falls. The town orignated following the 1901 land lottery which opened the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation to general settlement.  One of the community's main attractions in the early years was the prospect of mining the Wichita Mountains.

Posted GZ is a restaurant lot.  We'll meet there like the traditional miners and "provision up" with breakfast, share stories and then plan the rest of the day's activities.  Around 9:30 AM - we'll pack out for more exploring and fun.

The Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge is an amazing place to see beautiful scenery and wildlife, such as bison, lek, deer, badgers, prairie dogs and a short 10-minute drive from the event.  The refuge and surrounding area offers unique geocaching opportunities, also.  Here are a few options depending on how much time and energy you want to spend during the day.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge | U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service (fws.gov)

Hike to Lone Tree Virtual (GCBD5E) one of the few D5/T5 virtuals in the US.  This is a fairly strenous hike with an elevation gain of approximately 500-700 feet and requires "rock scrambling" and "off trail hiking." There are other geocaches accessible in this area of the park.

Driving Tour of Wichita Mountains - There are many Virtuals/Earthcaches relatively close to the road not requiring the level of effort as Lone Tree.  This tour should absolutely include a drive up the switchbacks of Mt. Scott - you will not believe the view!

Tour Fort Sill - a large, active US Army Fort.  You will need a US-issued ID and have it validated at the vistor center for entry.  There are several cool geocaches on the grounds, including GC3B0D - Geronimo!, a virtual in the Apache section of the military cemetery where Geronimo and many other Apaches are interred.

Visitor Welcome Center | VWC | Fort Sill | Oklahoma | Fires Center of Excellence (army.mil)

Tour Medicine Park - The town was founded in 1908 as Oklahoma's first resort town.  The founder fell in love with every aspect of the area from the cobblestone deposits to the mountains and creeks.  He bought the land and constructed the Medicine Park Summer Resort and Health Spa.  The Native Americans believe the nearby river water has medicinal qualities. There are geocaches, interesting shops, restaurants and fun sites in this quirky little town.
