Es trug sich 1488 folgendes zu, warum Hautacuperche nun mit einem Denkmal geehrt worden ist:

Im November 1488, als Hernán Peraza mit zwei Begleitern zu der einheimischen Yballa an die Höhle Guahedúm in der heutigen Gemeinde San Sebastián de la Gomera kam, wurde er durch Yballas Mann Hautacuperche, der Nachfolger des alten Inselhäuptlings Hupolupo werden sollte,ermordet.

Hautacuperche hat Peraza mit einem Wurfspieß im Genick getroffen, ebenso brachte er seine beiden Begleiter um. Hautacuperche selbst ließ bei der darauf folgenden, mehrtägigen Stürmung des Torré del Conde (San Sebastian) sein Leben. Er wurde vom Pfeil einer Armbrust tödlich getroffen.

Die Witwe Beatriz de Bobadilla hatte sich nach dem Begräbnis ihres Mannes Hernán Peraza mit ihren Kindern in den Turm zurückgezogen.

Am Baja de Secreto, beim Dorf La Puntilla im Valle Gran Rey, wo Hautacuperche die Rebellion von 1488 startete, wurde am 15. Juni 2007, auf Initiative des Amtes für Kulturerbe der Kanarischen Regierung (Directión General de Cooperación y Patrimonio Cultural del Gobierno de Canarias), eine vier Meter hohe Statue enthüllt, die den Revolten und Mörder Perazas, Hautacuperche, als gomerischen Held darstellt. Die Statue hält in der linken Hand einen zerbrochenen Krug und in der Rechten ein Lanze.

Die Statue des Hautacuperche schaut von ihrem Sockel aus auf ein Eckhaus direkt auf der anderen Strassenseite. Vor diesem Eckhaus befindet sich ein ca. 160 cm hoher zylindrischer Gegenstand, der wahrscheinlich heutzutage nicht mehr so oft genutzt wird. Wie lautet das vorher in schwarz geschriebene, jetzt überpinselte, aber noch lesbare, Wort unter dem auch überpinselten weltbekannten Zeichen?

En 1488 ocurrió lo siguiente, motivo por el que ahora se honra a Hautacuperche con un monumento:

En noviembre de 1488, cuando Hernán Peraza se presentó con dos compañeros ante el indígena Yballa en la cueva de Guahedúm, en el actual municipio de San Sebastián de la Gomera, fue asesinado por el marido de Yballa, Hautacuperche, que iba a suceder al antiguo jefe insular Hupolupo.

Hautacuperche golpeó a Peraza en el cuello con una lanza arrojadiza y mató también a sus dos compañeros. El propio Hautacuperche perdió la vida en el asalto posterior a Torré del Conde (San Sebastián), que duró varios días. Fue mortalmente herido por una flecha de ballesta.

La viuda Beatriz de Bobadilla se había retirado a la torre con sus hijos tras el entierro de su marido Hernán Peraza.

En Baja de Secreto, cerca del pueblo de La Puntilla, en Valle Gran Rey, donde Hautacuperche lanzó la rebelión de 1488, se inauguró el 15 de junio de 2007, por iniciativa de la Dirección General de Cooperación y Patrimonio Cultural del Gobierno de Canarias, una estatua de cuatro metros de altura que representa al sublevado y asesino de Peraza, Hautacuperche, como un héroe gomero. La estatua sostiene una jarra rota en la mano izquierda y una lanza en la derecha.
