#35 The Dogliest Detective and the Railroad Heist

"You mean you want me to ride the train all day?" Toby asked to the policeman standing at his door.

The Alaska Railroad policeman chuckled. "We hope you can help us recover some valuable property stolen from the luggage of cruise ship passengers that were ransacked by thieves on the train."

The police car took Toby to the train depot, though Toby was dissapointed they didn't use the lights or siren.

But Toby was thrilled to learn he would ride in the caboose, where he received a more detailed briefing.

"The thieves might have boarded the train in Seward, so we are going to look for a drop bag all the way there and back today. However they also could have boarded the train at the Spencer Glacier stop where they would blend in with the scruffy-looking people we ususally pick up there."

"The thieves were caught when the train arrived in Anchorage, but they must have thrown a bag of stolen loot off the train before it arrived. We are holding them on charges now, but we need to recover the loot. They did have a GPS, binoculars, a cell phone, and had a handwritten note."
"So, Toby, what do you think the 'RG' and 'M' mean? So far we have ideas about it being 'Rain Gages' or 'Road Guardrails' or 'Railroad Guides'. We figured out the 'M' is probably meters or miles."

All the policemen stared at Toby, expecting some insight. But all Toby could say is "I have no idea what they mean. Let me think about it."

The policemen spent the whole trip looking closely on both sides of the track for both the missing loot and any indication of what the written note might mean. They grew irritated at Toby, however, as he was playing with his phone, taking scenic pictures, and generally enjoying the train ride like a tourist.

They arrived back to Anchorage that night, dejected, and the police sargeant barely acknowledged Toby's assistance. Toby had to ask the Sargent for a ride home.

The sargent just gave him a glaring look.  So Toby asked the Sargent to stop to pick up food for his dinner on the way.

"I really don't have time to take you to get dinner, Toby.  I have a lot of work to do on this case yet." he said with an irritated tone.

Toby didn't flinch. "I know you will be busy. But the restaurant is on the way to  the place noted in the thieves' note, so you won't be wasting much time."

The sargent was incredulous. "Really? Then what does the RG mean?"

"I have no idea. The plus sign is the only clue that I figured out." said Toby with his tail wagging.
