Geocache Description:

This cache is dedicated to St. Florian (Florian from Lorch) - a Catholic saint and patron of firefighters, but also of chimney sweepers and bakers (* 250, Zeiselmauer-Wolfpassing – † May 4, 304, Lorch). He is the first Austrian martyr and saint at the same time. In Austria, the city of Sankt Florian is named after him.

Florian was a colonel in the legionary army of the Roman emperor in Cetia (today's Zeiselmauer in Austria). In 304, he defended 40 arrested and imprisoned Christian legionnaires in Lorch. For trying to free them, he was arrested, tortured and sentenced to death by the governor Aquilianus. The execution took place on May 4, 304 on the banks of the river Enns. A millstone was tied around his neck and he was subsequently drowned. Legend has it that the water washed Florián's dead body onto a rock, where he was found by the widow Valéria, guarded by a great eagle from disgrace.

Nowadays, the statue of St. Florián can be found in many places - squares, road junctions, vineyards, as well as on the facades of country houses and especially on fire stations. Among the typical features of these sculptures are mainly his Roman military clothing, military helmet and burning house, while St. Florián is often caught pouring water on this house. Sometimes the mentioned eagle is also depicted with him.

You can also see this scene on the nearby statue located in St. Florián in Záhorská Bystrica, where this cache will lead you - notice the model of the house at his right foot and the bucket with pouring water in his hand.

Please do not cross the railing nor climb on the statue! The cache container is located on the exact coordinates, not on the statue!
