100 years ago to the day the Inner Shrines that surrounded the sarcophagus were opened by Howard Carter and this team. Back in the early winter of 1922 the Tomb of Tutankhamun was discovered by Howard Carter. Since then he has been meticulously cataloguing, preserving and storing every item that was discovered in the burial chamber - it was sensational news at the time.
The New Year of 1924 Carter was finally ready to open the shrines to reveal the sarcophagus that hasn't been seen for 3260 years. Four shrines enclosing the sarcophagus were dismantled from the tight space of the antechamber. When removed, one thing for sure, he was certain that the grave robbers of ancient times never reached the sarcophagus and that Tutankhamun's mummified body still lies undisturbed and intact.
Howard Carter got to lift the lid of the sarcophagus on the 12th February 1924. We'll meet again to celebrate that anniversary with our own sarcophagus cache to open!
