Scientists have a lot of fun watching animals in the wild, and especially enjoy watching animals interacting with one another. The relationship between ravens and wolves is a unique one. They share a symbiotic relationship which means that they both benefit from what they do for each other. Ravens often scavenge at wolf feeding sites (sometimes taking up to two thirds of the available carcass!) Wolves appear to be responsive to the calls of ravens, whether for alert of nearby danger, or for an unattended carcass. Scientists have observed ravens playing with wolf pups, and have seen the black birds teasing adult wolves. Ravens are sometimes referred to as “wolf-birds” by different cultures because of their social attachments with wolves. Do you remember how to tell the difference between a raven and a crow?
