Le Beffroi de Fougères est élevé sur des roches massives, de couleur verdâtre, hachées de plans de fractures tapissés d'une pellicule d'oxydes de fer qui donnent à l'affleurement une teinte rouille. Ce sont des cornéennes dont la formation est intimement liée à la proximité d'un granite. Lors de l'édification de la chaîne cadomienne, il y a 540 millions d'années, un important volume de magma granitique (le batholithe mancellien) s'est mis en place au sein des sédiments précambriens du nord du département. Ici, à une profondeur de 5 kilomètres, le flux de chaleur issu du granite de Louvigné-du-Désert, pourtant situé à une distance d'un kilomètre, a lentement induit la cuisson des sédiments briovériens environnants (des siltites et des grès). Cette modification, principalement thermique, se traduit par une induration du sédiment qui se transforme alors en une roche métamorphique dure à l'aspect de corne, ce qui lui vaut le nom de cornéenne.
In its western part, on both sides of the Melusine Tower, the ramparts of the Castle are raised on massive, greenish rocks, chopped with fracture planes covered with a film of iron oxides which give the outcrop a rusty hue. They are hornfels whose formation is closely linked to the proximity of a granite. During the construction of the Cadomian chain, 540 million years ago, a large volume of granitic magma (the Mancellian batholith) was established in the Precambrian sediments of the north of the department. Here, at a depth of 5 kilometers, the flow of heat from the Louvigné-du-Désert granite, yet located at a distance of 1km, slowly induced the cooking of surrounding Brioverian sediments (siltstones and sandstones). This change, mainly thermal, results in an induration of the sediment which is then transformed into a hard metamorphic rock with the aspect of horn, which is worth to him the name of cornea.
Dans le détail, cette roche n'est pas homogène respectant en celà le litage sédimentaire originel qui est, sur l'affleurement, vertical. Certains de ces lits centrimétriques, initialement plus alumineux (anciennes boues, anciennes vases), montrent des tâches millimétriques, noires : ce sont des cristaux d'un silicate d'alumine, l'andalousite, développés à l'état solide. Ces lits alternent avec des bandes plus homogènes, de teinte généralement plus rosée, dépourvue de ces cristaux. Les lits plus sableux ce transforment eux en microquartzite (sans andalousite car il n'y a pas d'alumine).
In detail, this rock is not homogeneous, respecting the original sedimentary bedding which is vertical on the outcrop. Some of these centrimetric beds, initially more aluminous (old sludge, old vases), show millimetric, black tasks: they are crystals of an alumina silicate, Andalusite, developed in the solid state. These beds alternate with more homogeneous bands, of a generally more pinkish hue, devoid of these crystals. The more sandy beds turn them into microquartzite (without andalusite because there is no alumina).
