Geocache Description:

Estimated time to complete: 30 min
Estimated distance to travel: 500m

This letterbox hybrid cache follows on from the now archived Heatherdale 3132 Letterbox. In the previous letterbox cache you were delivering mail, now your task is boxing letters.

Background

Letterboxing began in Dartmoor England in 1854, some 140 years before geocaching had been invented. A series of clues leads to a letterbox where an imprint from a hand-carved stamp in your own notebook is the reward. You return the favour by stamping the cache’s logbook with your own stamp (or, as this is the modern letterbox hybrid form, you can just sign it as per usual). If you wanted to try making your own stamp, just search for stamp carving videos - it’s not that hard and you might surprise yourself with your creativity. Here’s a short video as an example: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=En9gJI4Gk-c

Boxing letters

Your aim is to visit 4 locations and collect letters to add to the boxes of the red grid. You will then be able to fill in the boxes of the blue grid and discover the cache location.

Red grid - visit locations

At the listed coordinates you are looking for a yellow bottlecap container at knee height. It is attached to the lower trunk of a 3m high bush. The bush is next to a large gum, 1m in diameter at the base. The container will reveal the coordinates for the first location.

  1. You will find yourself in front of a sign. Add the 15 green letters to the first row of empty grid boxes and proceed South 80 metres.
  2. You will have reached another sign with 13 letters in three groups. Add these letters to the second row of empty grid boxes. Continue South 30 metres.
  3. You will have reached a multi-coloured structure. It has a three word name made up of 17 letters. Add these letters to the third row of empty grid boxes. Continue roughly South-West 45m.
  4. You will have reached a bright structure. You might think that this is the final destination, but you would be wrong! Find the warning sticker with a sentence of 20 red words at the bottom. Add the 9 letters making up the 6th, 9th and 12th words to the fourth row of empty grid boxes.

Now use the collected letters to fill in the boxes of the blue grid and discover the cache location.

Blue grid - discover the cache

Please do not remove the stamp or stamp pad - they are not trade items and must remain with the cache.

The cache has been placed with the permission and support of the 1st Heatherdale Scout Group.
