Geocache Description:

The 12 Days of Cachemas (TDOC23) is a series of 78 caches, events and adventure labs placed across Victoria to celebrate Cachemas in July in 2023. The series is a joint initiative of Geocaching Victoria and the local community to release caches in a different category each day across the state.

We hope you have as much fun finding this series, as we had placing them.

Now on to the cache.

On the eleventh day of Cachemas, Signal gave to me,
eleven multis staging,
ten mysteries solving,
nine letters boxing,
eight gadgets tricking,
seven TOTTs a-needing,
six events meeting,
five adventure labs,
four active CITOs,
three quirky challenges,
two earthcaches
and a wherigo up in a tree.

Welcome to my 12 Days of Cachemas Cache Offering - It's All About The View

I’ve been lucky to be able to travel around Gippsland all of my life. Lakes Entrance is one of the special places that I've spent many, many happy holidays at.   Whenever I arrive in Lakes Entrance, I’m on the lookout for the first view of the ocean and the town.  As kids, my brother and I would compete to be the first to spot a hint of water through the trees on the way in or to try to spot one of the oil rigs off the coast.  As we came over the rise and started to head down Kalimna Hill the squeal of "there's the Entrance" rang out through the car.  And -  that ocean view always appeared to be just that little bit brighter and a little more special at the start of our Christmas holidays.

Your Task:

To travel to four different viewing spots to gather information to find the cache and to discover the views of Lakes Entrance and the surrounding water ways.   Can you spot an oil rig?  Did see a trawler heading out or coming home?  Was the “Tommy Norton” out working to keep the Entrance clear?  Could you spot the local Burrunan dolphin population passing by?  Did a pelican glide over you while it was surfing a thermal current?

The Cache:

You can walk to all waypoints (it may take a while but it’s an awesome walk) OR drive.  If you choose to drive, it is better to be coming up Kalimna Hill to access the first two waypoints especially waypoint one.  Turning will be very difficult if you are coming down the Hill and I don’t advise trying it.  There is parking available at each waypoint.

  • The cache container is:  a micro and camo'd.   PLEASE replace it carefully (lid to the front) in its hidey spot.
  • BYO Scribble Stick

At each waypoint, you will need to gather answers to the given questions.  Once you have all answers, there are a few simple mathematical problems to solve to find the South and East Co-Ords to take you to Ground Zero.

The listed co-ords will bring you to - Waypoint One:  Jemmy’s Observation Point - the Entrance, lake views and information signs

A:            How many information signs are there at this Observation Point?

B:           On the Coastal Port sign, what year did the Orme sail out the Entrance?

C:           What year were the Burrunan dolphins recognised as a new species?

D:          On the Oil and Gas Fields sign, how many oil only platforms can be counted?  (This sign has gone missing - the required info is below.)

E:           On the Oil and Gas Fields sign, how many oil and gas platforms can be counted? (This sign has gone missing - the required info is below.)

F:           The name of the traditional owners of Gippsland is ....?   You will need to work out how many letters there are in their name.

At the co-ords for Waypoint Two:  Entrance and lake Views – from the new viewing platform.

G:          At the waypoint two co-ords, look down.  What colour is the marker buoy just at the end of the retaining sea wall?   You will need to work out how many letters in the colour name.

H:          At the listed co-ords, there is a motel behind you.  What is its name on the tall, small sign?  You will need to work out how many letters there are in the MIDDLE word

At the co-ords for Waypoint Three:  Check out the Town below.

I:            At waypoint three, where will this sign lead you to?  You will need to work out how many letters there are in the street name.

J:            Turn back towards the houses lining the street, what is the first digit of number of the house on the right corner?

At the co-ords for Waypoint Four:  The Entrance and lake views – Jemmy's Point Lookout.

K:           How far is the visibility from this structure?

L:           On the Rotary International sign, what date was this tree used from as the main lookout for the town?

There is a brand new viewing platform to sit at to enjoy the view.  If you’re not in a hurry - bring a cuppa and a picnic to enjoy and soak in the view while you work out your final co-ords for Ground Zero.

If you would like to view the Entrance at anytime, Gippsland Ports have a web cam on the tall, man-made structure (at Waypoint Four) that can be accessed via:

https://www.gippslandports.vic.gov.au/boating/webcams/lakes-entrance-jemmys-point/

Your gathered information:

 I    J   K  L

    8 9

Use your gathered information to work out Ground Zero:

South 370 B -1904 (G - H) + 1  .  C - 2003 E - J D - I
South 370     .

East 1470  A    K - 20  .  F - J K - 22 L - 1888
East 1470     .

Checker: when each digit of each co-ord is added  -  S = 34 and E = 38

Merry Cachemas in July 2023.

Happy cache hunting and I hope you enjoy the view.
