Pont Aven est installée sur le granite hercynien de Trégunc à gros cristaux de feldspaths, quartz et micas. On peut observer les chaos de granites et les blocs éboulés dans la rivière.
Ces blocs se sont formés à la suite d’une altération chimique par les eaux (pluie, gel, dégel,...) qui se sont infiltrées le long des fissures du granite (diaclase) et qui peu à peu transforment certains minéraux du granite comme les feldpaths, le mica en argiles (hydrolysant). Cette altération produit une roche friable, composée de sables et d’argiles appelée arène.
L’eau en poursuivant son travail d’érosion fait disparaître l’arène granitique et laisse apparaître les blocs de granites entassés les uns sur les autres. L’érosion leur donne des formes arrondies associées à des formes mineures d'érosion (micromodelés tels les taffoni, les vasques — microformes les plus répandues sur les rochers granitiques, les cannelures, etc.)
Selon la position topographique du chaos, on parle de tor, s'il se trouve au sommet d'un interfluve (point haut séparant deux vallées), s'il se trouve dans le fond d'une vallée, on parle d'un chaos de boules lavées.

Pont Aven is installed on the Hercynian granite of Trégunc with large crystals of feldspar, quartz and mica. One can observe the chaos of granites and the crumbling blocks in the river.
These blocks were formed as a result of chemical alteration by water (rain, frost, thaw, etc.) which infiltrated along the cracks in the granite (diaclase) and which gradually transformed certain minerals in the granite such as feldpaths, mica in clays (hydrolyzing). This alteration produces a friable rock, composed of sands and clays called arena.
The water, continuing its work of erosion, causes the granitic arena to disappear and reveals the blocks of granite piled up on top of each other. Erosion gives them rounded shapes associated with minor forms of erosion (microforms such as taffoni, basins — the most common microforms on granite rocks, grooves, etc.)
According to the position of the chaos we speak of tor if it is at the top of an interfluve (high point separating two valleys), if it is at the bottom of a valley we speak of a washed balls boulder.
