L'ancienne fontaine de Valmestroff et ses bancs sont en granite rose. Le granite est une roche dite magmatique ou roche ignée
Les roches magmatiques sont des roches endogènes car formés en profondeur par opposition aux roches exogènes ormées par solidification de matériaux à la surface du globe (telles les roches sédimentaires et les roches métamorphiques).
Les roches magmatiques sont classées par 2 types :
Le granite est donc une roche plutonique à texture grenue, riche en quartz, qui comporte plus de feldspath alcalin que de plagioclase. Il est caractérisé par sa constitution en minéraux : quartz, feldspaths potassiques (orthoses) et plagioclases, micas (biotite ou muscovite). Le granite et ses roches associées forment l'essentiel de la croûte continentale de la planète. C'est un matériau résistant très utilisé en construction, dallage, décoration, sculpture, sous l'appellation granit.
En l'absence de données, nous hypthétiserons que le granite de l'ancienne fontaine provient des expolitations minières de granite du massif des Vosges qui est le plus proche lieu d'exploitation de granite depuis Valmestroff. .
Nous pouvons distinguer deux principale variétés de granite extraites dans la carrière de Senones : Le granite variété feuille morte et le granite variété rouge corail
