Geocache Description:

There is nothing hidden at the posted coordinates. You must solve the puzzle below to determine the coordinates of the cache.

A few months ago I started creating mystery (puzzle) caches every week. This led to the '23 Winter series. It was so much fun, I decided to try to keep going through the Spring of 2023. This cache is the sixth in what I hope is a series of caches throughout the spring of 2023. Be sure to save the bonus information from the geochecker for the spring season finale. On with the show…

This time of year (May) is right in the middle of three patriotic holidays (thanks Wikipedia):

  • In April - Patriots' Day is an annual event, formalized as a legal holiday or a special observance day in six states, commemorating the battles of Lexington, Concord, and Menotomy, some of the first battles of the American Revolutionary War. The holiday occurs on the third Monday of April each year, with celebrations including battle reenactments and the Boston Marathon.
  • In May - Memorial Day (originally known as Decoration Day) is a federal holiday in the United States for honoring and mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States armed forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May.
  • In July - Independence Day (colloquially the Fourth of July) is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence, which was ratified by the Second Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, establishing the United States of America.

I grew up about 20 miles from Concord, Massachusetts; and later I went to college in Boston. The revolutionary war and the events leading up to it were never too far out of sight, even 200 years after the declaration of independence. We learned about the Tea Party and the Stamp Act and the Boston Massacre. We walked the freedom trail and saw Paul Revere’s house. We learned that the tolerance for taxation without representation was waning and eventually the temperature got so hot it just boiled over in the battle of Lexington and Concord. The many visible forms of resistance were too much to let go for these colonists and soon the values of independence multiplied across the land and a revolution had begun. Groups including the Loyal Nine, Sons of Liberty, Daughters of Liberty, the RMA, and the Stamp Act Congress formed to advance the rights of the colonists, build resistance, and to fight taxation by the British government.

These groups birthed other groups like the Culper Spy Ring and were some of the first users of ciphers in the new world, including pigpen; and messaging techniques like sympathetic stain (invisible ink) and masked letters. You could say they created an American standard code for information interchange with the various ways they shared messages from Massachusetts to Georgia, in and around the major cities and British troops. This spycraft during the American Revolution consisted of a complicated system of hidden networks, interpersonal relationships, scientific knowledge, personal cunning, guile and risk taking.

Now that we are nearly 250 years post revolution, the country has expanded beyond the initial 13 colonies to a group of 50 united states. It is in the images of these United States of America that I’ve hidden special instructions for finding my next cache. Good luck breaking this cipher and getting the message through the lines.
