In the early
1800s, what is the current City of Rocky Mount, North
Carolina was established in an area adjacent to the Tar River
where there is a falls or drop in the river. The area has
many rocky outcrops and other unusual features. Rocky Mount
is far from the mountains of North Carolina situated in the
Coastal Plain about 50 miles northeast of Raleigh.
A cotton mill was established near these falls in the river and a
village began to emerge in the area across the river from the mill.
A post office was established very early to serve the residents.
This village was later abandoned as a new village for the mill
workers was constructed and Rocky Mount was moved a few miles away
to be near where the new north-south railroad was constructed.
This area is now a city park and the only evidence that there was
any activity is an old grave yard and a marker commemorating the
establishment of the post office. This area is part of the Tar
River Trail - see the details at this web page http://www.ci.rocky-mount.nc.us/parks&rec/TRTSignage.pdf
To verify that you visited this park and particularly the original
post office site, e-mail the name of the park and date the old post
office was established along what is unusual about the marker's
placement.
If you do your homework, you will find that coordination of your
efforts with other nearby geocaches will be rewarded. This is an
easy side trip off of a major highway.
