All are invited to the new gardens at Aldwych outside the the old Strand tube station for a geocaching event on Saturday morning at 10am, 20th May 2023.
Strand tube station opened in 1907 as a shuttle branch line off the Piccadilly line from Holborn to serve the theatregoers to this part of the West End. The station changed its name to Aldwych in 1915. During WWII the station shut for rail passengers and converted to a bomb shelter storing artefacts from the British Museum and sheltering members of the public. After the war in 1946 it reopened for rail passengers until 1994 when the upgrade of the station became too costly and the decision was made to closed station. Today, the station is still in use but only for film productions and private tours.
Recently, the street outside the station was shut for road traffic and pedestrianised with landscaped gardens. We meet at seating area in the new gardens for a geochat and an exchange of Trackables.
