A heroic act of resistance
In the region of Limoges there is a rubber
regeneration plant essential for the German economy, producing fifteen
to twenty tons per day. On the night of 8-9 May 1943, Georges Guingouin
succeeded, at the risk of his life, in blowing up the two furnaces in
the Wattelez rubber factory, which was very important for the German war
economy. There were only two rubber factories in France, one at the
Palais-sur-Vienne and the other at Colombes.
Three times, on 6, 29 and 30 April 1943, the RAF bombed the Colombes
factory. Alas, the population had been seriously affected and Marshal
Pétain, on the radio, had skillfully exploited this situation. Aware of
this disastrous impact, the Allied High Staff had asked the Combat
movement to destroy the Palais’ factory by explosive means, but this had
not been possible. Informed, Georges Guingouin, despite the difficulties
of moving from his base in the forest of Châteauneuf-la-Forêt, 30 km
away, decided to do the operation. Accompanied by five other guerrillas,
including René Duval, on the night of May 9, 1943, he blew up two
boilers. Shutting down this plant for five months will cost the Germans
1,500 tonnes of rubber.
The
geocache is near the headstone marking these events. The factory
site is on the other side of the road.
The
post-war period
The Wattelez company has been operating a
rubber regeneration plant at the Palais-sur-Vienne since 1921. Up to 400
people worked on the site. In 1989 the business was sold to Eureca,
which in two years ended up filing for bankruptcy and then went into
liquidation. Approximately 90,000 tonnes of waste are abandoned on site.
It will be necessary to wait until 2012, several fires and the end of a
legal imbroglio between Wattelez (owner of the site) and the disappeared
operator so that the disposal of the tons of waste and pollutant
products is started and the site is safe.
Why "VERT"
?
My first geocache ( GC3VHY2) was a green box, with a green pen, a
green log book and green items for exchange. So is born the idea to
place the caches which followed under the sign of the "VERT" ("GREEN"
in French) and to propose a challenge consisting in dropping there
rather "VERT" items. This challenge cannot unfortunately concern the
caches in nano or micro size.
