Anche Varese ha il suo lago!!!

Non sarà esteso come i grandi laghi della Lombardia, non avrà il ‘fascino’ malinconico del Verbano, o la celebrità internazionale del Lario, o l’appeal turistico del Garda, ma…. questo piccolo specchio d’acqua, la cui forma ricorda vagamente quella di una scarpa, ha molte più risorse di quanto si possa immaginare! Anzitutto, come ogni lago che si rispetti, ha la sua isola: l’isolino Virginia, considerato uno dei luoghi di importanza fondamentale per gli studi sulla preistoria in Europa!

Ed ancora, nonostante gli storici ‘problemi di salute’ delle sue acque, inquinate negli anni del boom industriale un po’ come quelle di tutti i laghi e fiumi italiani, è oggi balneabile in più punti, grazie ad un lungo ed instancabile lavoro di bonifica di grande spessore ambientale e scientifico. Nel suo ecosistema vivono specie rare come l’airone rosso, il tarabuso, l’anatra moretta tabaccata, oltre ad una buona varietà di pesci e di flora tipica della torbiera di pianura.

Ma non è finita… vogliamo parlare di arte? I deliziosi piccoli borghi che ne circondano le sponde ospitano musei come il Salvini di Cocquio Trevisago o il Bodini di Gemonio, nonché tesori architettonici come il chiostro di Voltorre, la Villa della Porta Bozzolo o le ghiacciaie di Cazzago Brabbia… E poi, il turismo: la bellezza dei luoghi è stata resa maggiormente fruibile a tutti dalla pista ciclabile che permette di percorrerne l’intero perimetro visitandone gli scorci più belli e passando naturalmente per i lidi più caratteristici, come quello di Gavirate, quello di Bodio Lomnago e naturalmente quello della Schiranna. In ogni momento dell’anno, ma ancor più in primavera ed in estate, l’anello brulica di ciclisti, runners, fotoamatori, famiglie a passeggio, bagnanti e chi più ne ha, più ne metta… uno degli angoli più dinamici e vivaci dell’intera città!

Ma non possiamo concludere questa rassegna senza parlare di sport… non solo quello amatoriale praticato lungo le sponde del lago, ma anche e soprattutto quello con la S maiuscola che sta rendendo il ‘nostro’ lago celebre a livello mondiale! Parliamo del canottaggio, naturalmente! La forma, la grandezza, l’assenza di correnti importanti ed il clima hanno reso il lago di Varese uno dei luoghi ideali per la pratica di questo sport affascinante, libero e faticoso. La presenza di importanti e prestigiosi circoli canottieri a Varese e a Gavirate testimonia questa vocazione. Così il ‘piccolo’ lago di Varese è stato scelto come teatro dei Campionati Mondiali di Canottaggio Under 19 e Under 23 nel 2022, con 63 nazioni e 1500 atleti. E tra le tante vittorie italiane registrate durante l’evento, ci piace citare in particolare quelle di Sara, Nicolò e Alice, atleti varesotti in gara rispettivamente nelle specialità ‘Quattro di coppia’ femminile e maschile e nel ‘Quattro con’ femminile. Le loro canoe bianche con la bandiera d’Italia e la sigla ‘ITA’ sullo scafo hanno sfrecciato sulle onde guadagnando due medaglie d’oro e una d’argento.

Even Varese has its lake!!!

It will not be as extensive as the other great lakes in Lombardy, it will not have the melancholic 'charm' of Verbano, or the international celebrity of Lario, or the tourist appeal of Garda, but…. this small glass of water, whose shape vaguely resembles that of a shoe, has many more resources than you might imagine! First of all, like any self-respecting lake, it has its own island: the little island of Virginia, considered one of the places of fundamental importance for the study of prehistory in Europe!

And yet, despite the historic 'health problems' of its waters, polluted in the years of the industrial boom a bit like those of all Italian lakes and rivers, today it is suitable for bathing in several points, thanks to a long and tireless work of reclamation of hi-profile environmental and scientific depth.

Several rare species live in its ecosystem such as the purple heron, the bittern, the ferruginous duck, as well as a good variety of fish and flora typical of the lowland peat bog.

But that's not all… shall we talk about art? The beautiful smallvillages that surround the shores host museums such as the Salvini di Cocquio Trevisago or the Bodini di Gemonio, as well as architectural treasures such as the cloister of Voltorre, the Villa della Porta Bozzolo or the ice houses of Cazzago Brabbia…

And then, tourism: the beauty of the places has been made more accessible to all by the cycle lane that allows you to travel along the entire lake, visiting the most beautiful views and naturally passing through the most characteristic beaches, such as that of Gavirate, Bodio Lomnago and of course Schiranna . At any time of the year, but even more in spring and summer, the path is animated with cyclists, runners, amateur photographers, families out for a walk, bathers and so on … one of the most dynamic and lively corner of the whole city!

But we cannot end this review without talking about sports... not only the amateur one practiced along the cycle lane of the lake, but also and above all the one with a capital S that is making 'our' lake famous worldwide! Let's talk about rowing, of course! The shape, the size, the absence of important currents and the climate have made Lake Varese one of the best places for practicing this fascinating, free and shooting sport. The presence of important and prestigious rowing clubs in Varese and Gavirate attests this vocation. Thus the 'small' lake of Varese was chosen as the venue for the Under 19 and Under 23 Rowing World Championships in 2022, with 63 nations and 1500 athletes. And among the many Italian victories recorded during the event, we like to mention in particular those of Sara, Nicolò and Alice, athletes from Varese competing respectively in the women's and men's 'quad! and in the women's “coxed four”. Their white canoes with the Italian flag and the initials 'ITA' on the hull dominated the waves earning two gold and one silver medals.
