Perfect Tommy: Eight plus years is pretty good for a cache to survive in a teen hangout. The purple path goes right by the hiding spot so it was just a matter of time. Further, the graffiti that was the initial point and hint have weathered away or been obscured. Finally, with the resurrection of Garvus' puzzle cache, makes sense to archive this rather than have two mystery caches share the exact same header coordinates...

Geocache Description:

The coordinates above will only get you to the parking lot. To find this cache you will need to use very rudimentary orienteering skills. This is an homage to the Saxon Woods Geo-"O" Cache, although much easier.

The above coordinates are for the parking area at the Cranberry Lake Preserve located on Old Orchard Street just off Route 22 in North White Plains. Parking is free. Please park your car in the parking area - not in the Preserve itself (you'll see...).

The Nature Center at the Preserve is only open from 9 am to 4 pm on Tuesdays through Saturdays but the trails are open every day dawn to dusk. Get out by 4 pm or they will close the gates on your vehicle. Please do not go through private property to get to this cache. Trail maps (free) as well as orienteering maps ($2 a throw) are available at the Nature Center. You can also use this map.

The cache is hidden in the old Quarry. As such, there are steep cliffs near the cache location. It is recommended that you DO NOT bring small children. Bring hiking boots as some very light climbing is required. Once you get to the top of the quarry (which, BTW, is a popular hawkwatching site), look for Deirdre + Emily - that's your Initial Point. When you find the IP, take a bearing of 228 degrees magnetic and follow that bearing for a hundred and fifty feet or so. The ammo box cache is well hidden among the rocks. This area is a teen hangout so watch out for broken glass and please rehide the cache as you found it (if not better).

From 1912 to 1917, a large quarry on the property provided the rock and gravel used to make aggregate for the cement used in the construction of nearby Kensico Dam. Vestiges of the quarry operation, including a rock-crushing plant, a stone-cutting shed, railroad beds, and derrick footings - still exist at the Preserve. If you have the time, visit the Cascade and Root Cellar as well.
