Åby - a village close to Aarhus

Less than 4 km from the Cathedral in Aarhus, lies the old, cozy village of Åby or Old Åby, as some call it.
You can walk or cycle there from Aarhus via Brabrandstien and Haveforeningen Bakkevang.

In this Adventure Lab will you be shown around to some of the old houses in Åby; but since you are limited by 5 stations in A.L., naturally I cannot show you all of them. But you can just look further...

For many years Åby was a mass of farms that lay around the old church; but in 1781 a law was passed for the relocation of the farms in the small villages.
Therefore, the stables were demolished and new houses built in the village.

However, it was not something that happened overnight. In 1822, Lyngbygård's 16 manors were replaced and 8 of them were determined to be relocated to the field.

Gradually, more people followed and in the remaining farmhouses in Åby, householders and workers set up shop.
Aarhus' executioner also settled in Åby.

Kærvej 5 - N 56° 08.737 E 10° 09.770

This house was built in 1850 and was owned for a time by bell ringer and merchant, Niels Hansen. His wife, Else Marie (called Thick Else) looked after the church and ran a hawker's shop and a tavern next to it. Before 1903, she was the only trader in the parish and supplied Åby with the country's own products.

Kærvej 6 and 8 - N 56° 08.694 E 10° 09.730

Kærvej 6 and 8 were originally farmhouses for the farm, which was numbered 14 in the cadastre from 1844.
It's funny to think that the two houses were one house when you look at them today.
Also notice the wooden houses on the opposite side of the road.
Originally there were only two separate, charming Swedish-style houses built by a local carpenter in 1919 and 1920.

Åbyvej 114 - N 56° 08.745 E 10° 09.640

This extremely charming house was built in 1827.

Søren Madsen's Gang 2 - 8 - N 56° 08.762 E 10° 09.704

The houses in this cozy alley were built at different times:
No. 2: 1802
No. 4: 1777
No. 6: 1827
No. 8: 1850

One could well imagine that number 4 was originally a farmhouse for a farm.

Åby Church - N 56° 08.733 E 10° 09.733

In the years around 1200, a church was built in Åby in Romanesque style, consisting of nave and choir. It was built of granite blocks, but the inside of the walls consisted of field stones.
Perhaps due to poor foundations, the northern wall in particular began to slip and when it was feared that it would collapse, the church was demolished.

In 1872, the foundation stone for the current Åby Church was laid. This has a number of squares in its outer walls, which originate from the parish's first stone church.

Åby Church was built according to drawings by the royal building inspector V.Th. Walther in Romanesque style with an Italian touch. The masonry consists of bands of yellow and red bricks. The church room is very simple with a painted wooden ceiling and very few decorative objects.

The crucifix from Åby Church 1050-1100 is one of the earliest Christian relics. It is only in the Nordic countries that Jesus figures with a king's crown are known.
In the church there is the parish's original granite baptismal font and a copy of the golden crucifix that hung in the first church. The original is in the National Museum.
