Geocache Description:

Area History

In 2022 this area was actually entirely underwater for two whole weeks! In October 2022 La Niña delivered a soaking year for Kialla, with more than 200mm more rain than average across the 12 months, which set the scene for devastating flooding in October.

Bureau of Meteorology data for 2022 shows Kialla recorded 671mm of rain in 2022, the wettest year since 770.6mm fell in 2010.

August, September and October delivered the bulk of the wet weather, with 60.6mm of rain in August, 80.2mm in September — across 14 different days — and then 151.6mm in October, the month of the flooding.

Rain in August and September saw rivers rise across the region to minor flood level, before October’s deluge pushed all rivers and creeks in the region into major flood levels.

Two days in October alone — October 13 and 14 — delivered 33mm and 43.2mm of rain respectively in Kialla, with the peak of the flooding arriving days later as more than 200mm falling in the Strathbogie Ranges and further south of Shepparton arrived via the Broken and Goulburn rivers.

The Goulburn River reached 12.06 metres at its peak on October 17, shy of the projected 12.2m. This devastated the town for weeks and months. If you look around the area you will see that the estate was strategically built up a steep easement designed to withstand such record flood events - and it did! In fact, the water reached right up to the fencelines of the houses above, keeping all the residents dry. The same cannot be said for where you are standing...

The Geocache

Love puzzles? Love cult 80s movies? Well hopefully this configeration is enough to scratch that itch!

The cache itself is hidden in plain sight, but to unlock it's secrets (and log) you will need an eye for design. Does it twist? Fold? How does it configure? Be careful though...if you hear the sound of chains you better lie low.

Tips and Tricks

  • Unlike the silver screen's version, this cache like to be pulled apart - do not twist or beat.
  • For extra fun you can replace the box in one of any two configerations: the box or star formation.
  • Please ensure to hide well once found - the cenobites do not approve of muggle meddling.
  • BYOP - the log book exists inside the cache which is 100% accessible.
