Here are a few tidbits about Marshall, Texas:
It was the fIrst city in Texas to have telegraph service in Texas, when it was connected to New Orleans.
You may have heard of the Six Flags of Texas, but did you know Marshall has seven? After the government of Missouri was driven out by occupying forces during the Civil War, they moved their state capital to Marshall for the remainder of the war, and it operated as a government in exile. This is what gives Marshall its seventh flag.
After the fall of Vicksburg, Marshall became the seat of Confederate civil authority and headquarters of the Trans-Mississippi Postal Department.
Marshall was the site of the first sit-ins in Texas during the Civil Rights movement.
The 2007 movie, "The Great Debaters" depicted the story of the Wiley College (across town from here) debate team who defeated the reigning national debate champion, the University of Southern California in 1935, (USC was depicted as Harvard University in the movie)
Bishop College was founded in Marshall in 1881 by the Baptist Home Mission Society. It was intended to serve students in east Texas, where the majority of the black population lived at the time. In 1961 the administration moved the college into Dallas, Texas.
