PORTA SAN ZENO

E’ una delle tre porte progettata da Michele Sanmicheli ed è considerata la più “povera” delle tre; costruita in meno di un anno tra il 1541 ed il 1542 fu probabilmente per ragioni economiche oltre alla velocità di esecuzione richiesta, che venne fatto ampio uso di laterizio a discapito di un limitato uso della pietra per le facciate.
Dice il Vasari di Porta San Zeno: “in ogni altro luogo sarebbe meravigliosa, ma in Verona è la sua bellezza et artifizio dall’altre due offuscata”.

Di pianta quadrata con passaggio carraio centrale, vano laterale per il transito pedonale, interrompe i due attuali bastioni San Procolo e San Zeno ed era uno dei due principali ingressi per chi proveniva dal Passo del Brennero.  La porta era dotata, verso la campagna, di ponti lignei calanti sul ponte in muratura che attraversava il fossato magistrale.

It is one of the three doors designed by Michele Sanmicheli and is considered the "poorer" of the three; built in less than a year between 1541 and 1542, economic reasons in addition to the speed of execution required, were probably reason for the extensive use of brick to the detriment and a limited use of stone on the entire facade.
Giorgio Vasari says that Porta San Zeno: "in any other place would be wonderful, but in Verona its beauty and craftsmanship is overshadowed by the other two".

The plan is square with central driveway, side for pedestrian passage, it interrupts the two current bastions of San Procolo and San Zeno and was one of the two main entrances for those coming from the Brenner Pass. The gate was equipped, towards the countryside, with wooden bridges descending on the masonry bridge that crossed the masterful moat.
