Der Pfahl durchquert als uralte Bruchlinie das Grundgebirge des
Bayerischen Waldes. Seine erdgeschichtliche Bedeutung und
Einmaligkeit finden weltweit Interesse. Er gehört zu den
bedeutendsten geologischen Naturdenkmälern Bayerns. Sein Name
leitet sich ab aus dem Lateinischen: palladius steht hier für
bleich, fahl. Den Menschen im Arberland hat der Pfahl schon immer
Rätsel aufgegeben. Nicht umsonst spricht der Volksmund von
Teufelsmauer und Hexenwerk.
Ein Burglehrpfad des Naturparks Bayerischer Wald um die
Burgruine Weißenstein informiert Euch über die Natur und Kultur am
Pfahl. Neben der Geschichte und Architektur der Burg werden die
Erdgeschichte sowie die Tiere und Pflanzen des Pfahls ausgiebig
vorgestellt. Mit 753 m erreicht der Pfahl hier seinen höchsten
Punkt. Vom Burgturm aus könnt Ihr in schwindelerregender Höhe den
atemberaubensten Rundblick über fast den ganzen "Nordwald"
genießen.
Findet zudem heraus, was es mit dem "Fressenden Haus" auf sich
hat und besucht auch den absolut sehenswerten Gläsernen Wald, er
präsentiert den typischen Bayerwald in seiner Urform als Mischwald
– in Glas. Und das direkt auf dem Pfahl.

The "Pfahl" at the Bavarian Forest
The Pfahl as an ancient faultline crosses the bedrock of the
Bavarian forest. His geologically meaning and uniqueness creates
interest all over the world. As a rock formation the “Pfahl” is an
evidence of the elemental forces of the bavarian nature. The German
name, Pfahl, is derived from the Latin word Palladius, meaning in
this instance pale, sallow. The rock formations have always puzzled
the people of ArberLand. And the locals refer to them as Devil’s
Walls and Witches’ Work.
The castle trail of the National Park Bavarian Forest along the
ruined castle Weißenstein informs the visitors about nature and
culture of the Pfahl landscape. Not only castles history and
architecture even the history of earth as well as flora and fauna
are explicitly represented. The Pfahl peaks here also at a height
of 753 metres. From vertiginous heights the visitor can enjoy a
fabulous view over most of the Northern Bavarian Forest.
Furthermore you can experience the story of the “Devouring
House” and visit the absolutely worth seeing “Glass Forrest”, that
represents in glass the typical Bavarian Forest in his original
form. All this you can find straight on the “Pfahl”.
