Geocache Description:

Eng: Gaol or Leprosy were confined places where lepers gathered in the Middle Ages, and there are records of countless Leprosys throughout Portugal in the 14th century.

In Sintra, its medieval Leprosy was located precisely on this site, extending east from the  Ramalhão college and bordering the Chapel of Saint Lazarus to the west. The name of the chapel, which dates back to the 14th century and was rebuilt in the 15th century by order of Queen Leonor, couldn't be more allegorical, as Lazarus, who was also ill, was resurrected by the intervention of Jesus.

This was the hope that this small chapel conveyed to the lepers who, standing outside  so as not to mix with the healthy believers, could attend mass or listen to the prayers through the two windows that can still be seen in its main doorway.

This large space was thus a remote rehearsal of an organized social complex in the municipality which, in addition to the Chapel and the Leprosy, had a hospital and an adjacent cemetery where the São Pedro fair is held today. In 2016, human bones were discovered there that had been exhumed during intervention work on the river water drainage system.
