La Earthcache / The Earthcache
A Albi, sur la place de la Trebaille, une partie du pavement est réalisée avec un calcaire beige clair à grains très fins.
Mais ce calcaire recèle un autre mystère, d'étranges stigmates incrustés dans la roche.
Ces marques d'un passé mouvementé de la roche sont des stylolithes.
► Les stylolithes
~ Définition
Un stylolithe est une structure géologique se formant lors de la déformation en régime compressif d'une roche.
C'est une surface crénelée au niveau de laquelle les forces de compression ont dissous de la roche entre les particules silicatées et les particules carbonatées, réduisant le volume de la roche.
Cette dissolution engendre des films silicatés. La stylolitisation ne s’effectue que sous une charge lithostatique (et donc une profondeur) significative.
~ Classification
Park and Schot ont reconnu plusieurs géométries différentes :
- Type simple ou primaire comme une vague
- Type suturée, comme de petites crénelures irrégulières
- Type "Up-peak" / "Down-peak" (Rectangulaire)
- Type en crète (conique et pointue)
- Type Sismogramme

Ces figures tectoniques témoignent d'une déformation en régime compressif, généralement une collision continental orogenétique.
Les stylolithes permettent de connaitre la direction de la contrainte principale appliquée sur la roche. Cette contrainte est perpendiculaire au plan stylolithique (dans le schéma ci-dessus, elle est orientée verticalement).
In Albi, on the Place de la Trebaille, part of the pavement is made of light beige limestone with very fine grains.
But this limestone conceals another mystery, strange stigmata encrusted in the rock.
These marks of a rocky past are stylolites.
► Stylolites
~ Definition
A stylolith is a geological structure formed during the compressive deformation of a rock.
It is a crenellated surface at which compressive forces have dissolved rock between silicate particles and carbonate particles, reducing the volume of the rock.
This dissolution generates silicate films. Stylolitization occurs only under significant lithostatic load (and therefore depth).
~ Classification
Park and Schot recognized several different geometries:
- Simple or primary type like a wave
- Sutured type, like small irregular crenellations
- Type "Up-peak" / "Down-peak" (Rectangular)
- Crested type (conical and pointed)
- Type Seismogram
~ Formation
These tectonic figures bear witness to a deformation in a compressive regime, generally an orogenetic continental collision.
The stylolites make it possible to know the direction of the principal stress applied to the rock. This constraint is perpendicular to the stylolithic plane (in the diagram above, it is oriented vertically).

Le long de la longue fontaine se trouve une bande de calcaire sous la zone rouge de la photo WP1.
Along the long fountain is a strip of light limestone, below the red area in photo WP1.
