V obci Kopec (před válkou Hemmehübel) u Brtníků (Ziedler) fungovala po více než tři staletí tzv. Zimmerova pila. Teprve válka a její důsledky ukončily její existenci a dnes z ní zbývá jen málo. Připomeňme si její historii.
Zpracování dřeva má v oblasti dnešního Kopce dlouhou historii. Už v roce 1592 je v mapě Matyáše Oedera místo tehdy ještě neexistující osady označeno jako „Na staré pile“ („Am alten Sägewerk“). Jedni z významných místních mlynářů a pilařů byl rod Zimmerů. Mlýnský soupis z roku 1692 uvádí mlýn s jedním mlecím složením a pilou (pozdější č. p. 32), dědičně propachtovaný Johannu Zimmerovi. K mlýnu tehdy patřilo obytné stavení, stáj a právo rybolovu na Brtnickém potoce. Mlýn zde byl do začátku 18. století, později již jen pila. Po roce 1919 byl objekt rozšířen a zároveň došlo k zakrytí potoka za objekty pily, což obnášelo přemístění cca 2000 m³ zeminy. Ve dvacátém století vzrostl význam strojírenské výroby. Mj. zde vyráběli větroně pro olympiádu v roce 1936 v Berlíně a bylo jim to zadáno jako již známé a zavedené firmě. Celou pilu rozstřílela a odstřelila Československá lidová armáda v rámci vojenských cvičení mezi lety 1952-1957. Bylo to v hraničním pásmu a před tím dva roky chátrala, protože stát nemohl najít národního správce, který tam byl po vysídlení nasazen v letech 1945-1948. Podle pamětníků lze za dobu zničení Zimmerovky bezpečně určit r. 1963.
Nedaleko od místa, kde byla Zimmerova pila, se nachází socha sv. Antonína Paduánského, která má souvislost s Zimmerovou pilou (na titulní fotografii je patrná kousek nad komínem pily). Byla totiž postavena v roce 1707 na upomínku tragické smrti J. Zimmera, kterého zavalil vůz se sváženým dřevem. Nápis na čelní straně podstavce ve volném českém překladu zní: „Šestého července roku 1707 o jedenácté hodině zde skončil můj život. Johannes Zimmer.” Socha původně stála přímo proti pile, překážela ale provozu a byla proto přemístěna cca 100 m níže po silnici ve směru toku potoka někdy ve 20. letech. V roce 1998 byla ukradena a zřejmě prodána do Německa. Dnes je na sloupu nově pořízená kopie.

For more than three centuries, in the settlement of Kopec (prewar name Hemmehübel) has stood the so called Zimmer's Sawmill. It was the Second World War and what came after it that put the mill out of business and wiped most of it off the surface of the land.
There had been a long tradition of lumber processing in the area of what is today known as Kopec. In 1592 the site of the yet to be built settlement was already marked as “The Old Sawmill” („Am alten Sägewerk“) on the map of Matthias Oeder. One of the well-known miller families were the Zimmers. A mill document dated 1692 notes a mill and a sawmill (later house number 32) with a hereditary lease to Johannes Zimmer. This included living quarters, a stall and fishing rights on Ziedlerbach (today Brtnický potok). The mill existed until the eighteenth century, later only the sawmill remained. The sawmill was expanded after 1919 and the stream was covered, an effort that required moving of 2000 m³ of soil. In the twentieth century the importance of machine production had grown. For example, wooden glider planes for the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin were made here, typically such an order would have been given to already well-known and established businesses. The sawmill saw military exercises of Peoples' Army of Czechoslovakia between 1952 and 1957. The whole place fell into disrepair as the government had trouble finding an administrator. According to contemporaries the sawmill was finally razed down in 1963.
Near the location of the Zimmer's sawmill one can find a statue of St. Anthony of Padua, which is closely tied to the saw-mill's history (you can see it on the title photograph right above the smokestack). It was erected in 1707 as a memorial to a tragic accident that killed J. Zimmer when a haul of lumber fell on him. The writing on the front of the statue's plinth says: “On the sixteenth of July 1707 at eleven o'clock my life ended here. Johannes Zimmer”. The statue used to stand right in front of the sawmill, but it was an obstruction to traffic, so it was moved about 100 m downstream sometime in the twenties. In 1998 it was stolen and presumably sold to Germany. A replica was made and is what you can see at the site today.
