Le département des Basses-Alpes est l'un des 83 départements créés à la Révolution française par l'Assemblée constituante, le 4 mars 1790, en application de la loi du 22 décembre 1789. Ce nouveau découpage administratif, organisé autour d'un chef-lieu, devait permettre aux habitants de pouvoir s'y rendre à cheval, de n'importe quel point que ce soit, et d'en revenir dans les 48 heures.
Dans les années soixante, plusieurs départements voulurent changer leur nom. Les termes "inférieur“ ou ”bas", à connotation péjorative, étaient jugés inadéquats. Les Basses-Alpes sont donc devenues Alpes-de-Haute-Provence par décret du 13 avril 1970.
Dans leur extrémité Est, les Alpes de Haute-Provence marquent la limite avec l'Italie.

The department of the Basses-Alpes is one of the 83 departments created during the French Revolution by the Constituent Assembly on March 4, 1790, in application of the law of December 22, 1789. This new administrative division, organized around a chief town, was intended to allow the inhabitants to go there on horseback, from any point, and to return within 48 hours.
In the sixties, several departments wanted to change their names. The terms “inferior” or “bas”, with pejorative connotations, were considered inadequate. The Basses-Alpes thus became Alpes-de-Haute-Provence by decree on April 13, 1970.
In their eastern extremity, the Alpes de Haute-Provence mark the border with Italy.
