1922 Howard Carter met Lord Carnarvon at Highclere Castle to talk about a final search for Tutankhamun's tomb. 100 years later we too meet at Highclere to talk about our greatest cache finds. Climb up Beacon Hill for the geocaching event at 3pm, Saturday 17th September. For five consecutive winters Lord Carnarvon had hired Howard Carter to search for unaccounted Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings. The late summer of 1922 Carter was summoned to his home at Highclere Castle to discuss whether or not they should continue this apparently hopeless task. In view of the post-war economic stringency he would find it impossible to support this obviously barren undertaking. Carter said that their consistent failure to find anything had not weakened his conviction that the valley contained at least one more royal tomb, probably that of Tutankhamun...
The search was on. Howard Carter landed at Luxor on the 28th October 1922 to commence the most famous dig ever...
