Roscoff, « petite cité de caractère », a conservé son patrimoine architectural des xvie et xviie siècles. Elle obtient officiellement le statut de commune par le décret du 19 février 1790 de l’Assemblée Nationale.
Son port en eau profonde assure la liaison en ferry avec l'Irlande, la Grande Bretagne et l'Espagne. Un jardin exotique se trouve à proximité. L'île de Batz est desservie par des vedettes au départ du vieux port (centre-ville).
L'estran abrite une diversité biologique propre à deux écosystèmes d'algues frontaliers dont l'étude en 1872 est l'origine du premier pôle européen de recherches et d'enseignement en biologie marine : la Station biologique de Roscoff.
Roscoff a vu la naissance du concept de centre de thalassotérapie en 1899, avec l'institut de Rockroum, et la fondation d'un centre héliomarin en 1900. Plusieurs entreprises locales récoltent les algues et les transforment pour une utilisation alimentaire ou cosmétique.
Ses 14 kilomètres de côte comportent plusieurs plages de sable blanc très fin.
La région de Roscoff, réchauffée par le « Gulf Stream » et protégée des vents du nord par l'île de Batz, est la zone privilégiée de la « Ceinture Dorée » (un climat et un sol privilégiés pour l'agriculture).
En 1828, le cultivateur roscovite Henri Ollivier, affréta une gabarre qu'il chargea d'oignons et avec trois compagnons se dirigea vers l'Angleterre. Ils faisaient du porte-à-porte avec leurs tresses d'oignons.
Les vendeurs furent appelés en anglais Johnnies (« les petits Jean ») ou Johnnies Onions. Le terme est passé en breton : ar Johnniged.

Roscoff, a "small city of character", has retained its architectural heritage from the 16th and 17th centuries. It officially obtains the status of commune by the decree of February 19, 1790 of the National Assembly. Its deep-water port provides ferry connections to Ireland, Great Britain and Spain. An exotic garden is nearby. Île de Batz is served by speedboats departing from the old port (downtown). The foreshore is home to a biological diversity specific to two border algae ecosystems, the study of which in 1872 was the origin of the first European center for research and teaching in marine biology: the Roscoff Biological Station. Roscoff saw the birth of the concept of a thalassotherapy center in 1899, with the Rockroum Institute, and the foundation of a heliomarin center in 1900. Several local businesses harvest seaweed and process it for food or cosmetic use.
Its 14 kilometers of coastline include several very fine white sand beaches. The Roscoff region, warmed by the "Gulf Stream" and protected from the north winds by the island of Batz, is the privileged area of the "Golden Belt" (a privileged climate and soil for agriculture).
In 1828, the Roscovite farmer Henri Ollivier, chartered a barge which he loaded with onions and with three companions headed for England. They were going door to door with their onion braids. The sellers were called in English Johnnies ("little Johns") or Johnnies Onions. The term passed into Breton: ar Johnniged. The Roscoff pink onion is an A.O.P. since 2009
