A l'instar des lacs d'Issarlès, du Bouchet, Pavin, Chauvet (et bien d'autres encore), le lac de Saint Front est issu d'une activité volcanique explosive. Il s'agit d'un lac de type maar, signifiant "cratère" en allemand.
Bien que des similitudes de forme de cratère peuvent être remarquées avec certains volcans de la chaîne des Puys, comme celui de Pariou par exemple, il n'en demeure pas moins que leur formation est différente.
Sa forme arrondie témoigne de l'activité volcanique d'explosion liée à la rencontre du magma, remontant sous la surface, avec une nappe phréatique ou un cours d'eau souterrain créant un choc thermique. On parle d'éruption phréatomagmatique ou magmatophréatique. Une tension se crée sous la surface liée à la vaporisation de l'eau, engendrant l'arrachement et l'explosion de la roche de surface. Des blocs rocheux éclatent en fragments et sont projetés sur le pourtour du cratère circulaire formant ainsi des pentes plus ou moins abruptes.

En effet, le panache volcanique formé par ce type d'éruption est composé d'une bonne part de vapeur d'eau et de lave fragmentée (tephras composé de cendres, lapillis ou scories, bombes). (Cliquez sur l'image ci-dessous pour voir une éruption phréatomagmatique)
Par la suite, la nappe phréatique ou le cours d'eau initialement rencontré par le magma finit par alimenter le cratère et former un lac, celui-ci même, aussi nourri par le ruissellement des eaux de pluie.
Like the lakes of Issarlès, Bouchet, Pavin, Chauvet (and many others), the Saint Front lake is the result of explosive volcanic activity. It is a maar-type lake, meaning "crater" in German.
Although crater shape similarities can be noticed with certain volcanoes of the Puys chain, like that of Pariou for example, the fact remains that their formation is different.
Its rounded shape testifies to the volcanic activity of explosion linked to the meeting of magma, rising under the surface, with a water table or an underground watercourse creating a thermal shock. We speak of phreatomagmatic or magmatophreatic eruption. A tension is created under the surface linked to the vaporization of the water, causing the tearing and the explosion of the surface rock. Boulders burst into fragments and are projected around the circumference of the circular crater, thus forming more or less steep slopes.

Indeed, the volcanic plume formed by this type of eruption is composed of a good part of water vapor and fragmented lava (tephras composed of ashes, lapilli or slag, bombs). (Click on the image below to see a phreatomagmatic eruption)
Subsequently, the water table or the watercourse initially encountered by the magma ends up feeding the crater and forming a lake, the latter itself, also fed by the runoff of rainwater.
