This Pennsylvania town is named for a Netherlands-born Russian prince who converted to Catholicism in his teens to please his mother, then abandoned his royal lifestyle to serve as a missionary priest in the United States. He lost his inheritance, and lived a humble life in the Allegheny Mountains until his death in 1840. A nearby railroad tunnel was also named in his honor, until it was abandoned in the late 20th century. In 2005, the Congregation for the Causes of Saints named him a Servant of God, the first step to eventual Canonization.
