Le vieux quai est au cœur même de la ville. Sa construction a débuté en même temps que le développement des constructions urbaines. c’est un ouvrage magistral pour l’époque, où les villes maritimes et commerçantes sont souvent des villes de fond d’estuaire comme Morlaix.
En 1649 ce quai fait 175 m de long et il est achevé seulement en 1747.
Il est alors à peu de chose près dans la configuration actuelle. Sa construction a été longue car principalement financée localement par une taxe sur les alcools, vin, cidre et bières consommés dans les auberges de Roscoff.
La nécessité d’un port de commerce se fait sentir et la construction d’un nouveau bassin commence en 1911 avec "le quai neuf".
C’est seulement en 1932 que les travaux sont achevés.
