HISTORIQUE :

Find :
the year of the treaty of parage
between King Philip the Fair of France
and the abbot of Saint-André,
and refer to the table
in the section entitled "THE GAME
at the bottom of this page.
HISTORY :
The Philippe le Bel tower,
guardian of the Saint-Benezet bridge
The Philippe le Bel tower stands in front of you on this site.
In the background, on the other bank of the Rhône
stands the Palais des Papes,
symbol of the pontifical presence in Avignon in the 14th century.
Between them, overlooking the Rhône
is the Saint-Bénezet bridge
which for a long time was the only possible crossing between Villeneuve lez Avignon and Avignon.
The surveillance and control of the entrance to the bridge was for a long time a political and military issue
because the bridge marked the border between the Holy Roman Empire
then the Papal city and the kingdom of France.
It is the last vestige of the defensive work
which commanded the outlet of the Saint-Benezet bridge into the kingdom of France.
This tower was begun after the treaty of parage in the year 1292,
between the French king Philippe le Bel and the abbot of Saint-André,
and fully completed in the 15th century.
It marks the king's desire to establish his authority over the consuls of Avignon.
Access to Mourgues Hill
There are three entrances to the hill of Mourgues:
- Montée de la Tour street (Paul de La Boulaye door located to the east on the map)
- Montolivet Street (behind the school located to the north on the map)
- By the stadium located at the West on the map
( See Waypoint in the cache page )
At each entrance there is a welcome sign:
The Mourgues hill allows you to discover :
- The chapel of Notre-Dame de Consolation
- The hermit's tomb
- The ruins of the chapel
- A calvary
- A green theatre
- Dry stone terraces
LA COLLINE DES MOURGUES
La Colline des Mourgues is an enclosed and wooded estate of 7.8 hectares,
in the heart of the historic centre of Villeneuve Lez Avignon.
Today, apart from the portion occupied by sports facilities
this steep hill has become a superb public park
planted with pine trees laid down by the Mistral,
oaks and other species of the Mediterranean scrubland
as well as a Montpellier Maple, a remarkable tree.
Criss-crossed by paths and tracks, protected from run-off by terraces of dry stone walls,
It offers the walker exceptional views and panoramas of the old town,
the Tour Philippe le Bel, the Palais des Papes, as well as Avignon and the Mont Ventoux.
A signposting system allows the walker to discover all these particularities.
THE HISTORY OF THE HILL
The name "mourgues" comes from the Occitan word "monk",
the place being a former religious property.
There are still some remains of the hermitage where Father Crouzet-Lacombe
from the Chartreuse took refuge during the Revolution.
And you can still see the tomb he dug for himself in the rock
(but despite his last wish, the father is buried in the cemetery like everyone else).
At the top, the small chapel of Our Lady of Consolation was restored in the early 2000s.
Inside, frescoes were painted by the Nîmes artist Albert Martin.
And to evoke ancient Greece, further down the hill the Théatre de Verdure
has been fitted out with stone bleachers and hosts open-air shows in summer.
