Geocache Description:

Marselisborg Slot ligger i Aarhus og er H.M. Dronningens sommerresidens.

I 1967 stillede Frederik 9.

English

Marselisborg Palace is located in Aarhus and is HM The Queen's summer residence. The castle is surrounded by an English-style garden with small lakes, a rose garden and a number of works of art.

Marselisborg is named after a family that immigrated from the Netherlands. The merchant Gabriel Marselis acquired a part of the Jutland crown estate from Frederik III in 1661, and his son Constantin established the Marselisborg barony. Over the centuries, Marselisborg changed hands many times until the city of Aarhus bought what remained in 1896. In the following years, the last remains of the original main building were demolished.

In connection with the betrothal of Prince Christian (10th) to Princess Alexandrine in 1897, a proposal was made to provide funds for a summer palace for the couple somewhere in Jutland, and with Christian IX's permission a national collection was launched for the purpose. When the city council of Aarhus offered to make part of the Marselisborg estate available for the purpose, this location was chosen. In the years 1899-1902 the present Marselisborg Castle was built according to plans by the royal building inspector Hack Kampmann.

In 1967, Frederik 9. Marselisborg Castle to the then heirs to the throne, Princess Margrethe and Prince Henrik. The castle was modernised at the same time thanks to the funds given to the couple as a gift on the occasion of their wedding that year. The Queen now uses the palace as a summer residence.
