We will meet at the posted coordinates at 8:45 am to hang out and take a photo. We will then head 1/2 mile to a two-acre site on the north side of Refuge Road northeast of Saint Helen to plant more than 2000 jack pine trees. The goal is to create new breeding habitat for the rare Kirtland's Warbler.
We will go the planting site at 9 a.m. for registration and introductions. Then we will get instructions on how to properly plant jack pine trees and you and a partner will be sent out into the field. Fair warning: Tree planting is a strenuous activity. There's lots of bending and walking on sandy soil over stumps and lots of roots. If you have physical limitations, this event is not for you.
The event will be held rain or shine, so plan/dress accordingly. We may not like planting trees in the rain, but I guarantee you the trees LOVE it.
Lunch will be provided onsite after the planting is complete. There will also have snacks and water. Also, there will be a porta potty and hand washing station on site. And, if there are early arriving Kirtland's Warblers in the area, we'll hold an impromptu Kirtland's Warbler tour. Bring your binoculars.

This is a great way to learn about the connection between the Kirtland's Warbler and its jack pine habitat. It's also a great way to learn about how this ecosystem is critical to endangered plant species and how helps make the AuSable River holy waters for anglers.
