La cathédrale Notre-Dame de Saint-Omer édifiée du XIIIe au XVIe siècle, classée monument historique dès 1840, est considérée comme un exemple parfaitement préservé du style gothique de la région.
Construite sur le point culminant de la ville, la cathédrale Notre-Dame domine l’Audomarois de son architecture gothique flamboyante. Souvent considérée comme la plus belle église du Nord-Pas-de-Calais, elle surprend par son extraordinaire cohérence architecturale malgré une construction et des remaniements qui se sont échelonnés sur plusieurs siècles. Mais surtout, c’est la richesse de son mobilier qui retient l’attention.
Mais ce sont 2 éléments que nous développerons ici :
- L’horloge astronomique, commandée par les chanoines à Pierre Enguerran, orlogeur. C’est une horloge calendrier, astrolabe (indique la position des astres et constellations) et astrologique (référence aux signes du zodiaque). A l’origine elle était posée au sol, ce n’est que lors d’une rénovation en 1894 qu’il fut décidé de la poser en élévation sur la porte à tambour. Construite en 4 ans, de 1555 à 1559, la date et la signature de l’auteur y sont gravées.
- Le cadran solaire du portail sud : une œuvre exceptionnelle de l’art gnomonique. Réalisé au XVIIe siècle, il mesure plus de 15 mètres de long. Réalisé en 1610, il a été commandé par le chapitre des chanoines, suivant celle de l’astrolabe, montrant ainsi l’importance de ses grandes connaissances techniques et astronomiques. Sa fonction a un but pratique : servir d’étalon pour le contrôle de l’heure donnée de l’horloge astrolabe de la cathédrale et des horloges audomaroises. Rongé par l’érosion il a été restauré à de nombreuses reprises. Sa dernière inauguration date de 2014.

Our Lady of Saint-Omer Cathedral, built between the 13th and 16th centuries, was classified as a historic monument in 1840 and perfectly preserved example of the region's Gothic style.
Built on the highest point of the city, Notre-Dame Cathedral towers over the Audomarois with its flamboyant Gothic architecture. Often considered the most beautiful church in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region, it surprises visitors with its extraordinary architectural coherence despite centuries of construction and redesign. But above all, it is the richness of her furnishings that draws one's attention.
But those are two elements which we will further develop here:
- The astronomical clock commissioned by the canons to Pierre Enguerran, a clock-maker. It is a calendar, astrolabe (indicates the position of the stars and constellations) and astrological clock (refers to the signs of the zodiac). Originally placed on the ground, only during renovations in 1894 was it placed at a height on the drum door. It took 4 years to construct, from 1555 to 1559, and the date and signature of the author are engraved on it.
- The south portal sundial : an exceptional work of gnomonic art. It was built in the 15th century and measures more than 15 metres long. Built in 1610, it was commissioned by the next collegiate of canons following that of the astrolabe, thus showing the importance of their great technical and astronomical knowledge. Its function has a practical purpose: to serve as a standard to control the time given by the astrolabe clock of the cathedral and all other Audomarois clocks. Gnawed by erosion, it has been restored many times. It was last inaugurated in 2014.
