On trouve en haut de cette montagne vosgienne une très belle abbaye, depuis laquelle on peut admirer une superbe vue sur la Plaine d’Alsace et la Forêt Noire d’un côté, les montagnes des Vosges de l’autre côté.
Le Mont Sainte-Odile est un lieu de pèlerinage important, notamment du fait de la source qui se trouve en contrebas et qui aurait des pouvoirs curatifs sur les maladies oculaires. Mais on vient aussi tout simplement pour la beauté des lieux.
Brève histoire du Mont Sainte-Odile
A l’époque des Celtes, la montagne s’appelait Altitona, mot qui signifie “la montagne haute”. Pour les Celtes, il s’agissait déjà d’un lieu de culte et il y firent construire une forteresse, dont le mur d’enceinte correspond sans doute aujourd’hui au fameux “mur païen”.
Au 7e siècle, le lieu appartenait au Duc d’Alsace Adalric, le père de Sainte-Odile. Il y fit d’abord construire une résidence, le Château de Hohenbourg. Il rejeta sa fille née aveugle, qui ne recouvrira la vue qu’à son baptême à l’âge de 12 ans. Il ne comprendra son destin et ne l’acceptera que face au miracle du rocher ouvert.
Il fit ensuite construire un monastère en 700, dont il fera don à Sainte-Odile, qui le transformera alors en couvent. Le lieu devint rapidement un lieu de pèlerinage très fréquenté, notamment pour les personnes atteintes de maladies oculaires.
Bien national sous la Révolution Française, le Mont Sainte-Odile est racheté par l’évêché de Strasbourg en 1854, qui le rétablit alors à sa vocation monacale première.
