Geocache Description:

The High Court of Australia is the highest court in the Australian judicial system. It was established in 1901 by Section 71 of the Constitution.  It is the highest court in Australia.  It is the final court of appeal in Australia.  It has both original and appellate jurisdiction, the power of judicial review over laws passed by the Parliament of Australia and the parliaments of the states and territories, and the ability to interpret the Constitution of Australia.

The building: The High Court building was designed between 1972 and 1974 by Australian architect Christopher Kringas, who passed away 12 days before construction began.  Following his death, Hans Marelli continued the project as director until construction was completed in 1980.  The building is primarily constructed from bush-hammered reinforced concrete.  It also has large areas of glazing, and the building allows in a lot of controlled natural light.

To log this cache, please message/email with the following:

Photo: as evidence that you were there, please take a photo of yourself (you don't have to include your face in the photo if you don't wish to do so) or if you prefer, something identifying you as a geocacher (your pathtag, your cache name on paper, your favourite geocaching pen, etc.).  This ensures that the photo has been taken for the purpose of logging this cache.

Please ensure that the photo is taken at the listed co-ordinates, with either the High Court of Australia sign or the entrance to the High Court visible.  This ensures that you have visited the cache location for the purpose of logging this cache.  If you are inside the High Court, you are in the wrong place.  If you are at the front doors to the High Court, you are in the wrong place. The listed co-ordinates are next to the "High Court of Australia" sign, which is on the side of a concrete ledge.

Optional Research: For fun, please do this little bit of research and include with your message/email to me (any or all of the following questions):

1. What is the full case name and a citation (your choice of citation) for the Mabo decision?

2. What is the process called where the national votes to make a change to the constitution?
Answer: R _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

3. Pick a High Court of Australia decision (something other than the Mabo decision please) and very briefly tell me something about it - for example, you might provide an answer on: What was the case about? What was the outcome? How did it affect the law in Australia? Who were the judges? Was it a majority decision or was the decision split? Why do you find it interesting? - I don't expect a long answer, a brief one is fine! I don't expect perfect answers but it will be very pleasing if you have a go.

4. (added 7 Mar 2022) I can see from a few logs that this building has significance to many people as being the setting of a classic Australian movie - if you have seen it and you wish to do so, tell me your favourite quote from "The Castle"!

You don't have to put your answers in the log if you don't wish to do so.  Please do include your photo in the log.
