🇺🇸 THE PANAMA CANAL 🇺🇸

The Panama Canal (Spanish: Canal de Panamá) is an artificial 82 km (51 mi) waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean and divides North and South America. The canal cuts across the Isthmus of Panama and is a conduit for maritime trade. One of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, the Panama Canal shortcut greatly reduces the time for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, enabling them to avoid the lengthy, hazardous Cape Horn route around the southernmost tip of South America via the Drake Passage or Strait of Magellan and the even less popular route through the Arctic Archipelago and the Bering Strait.

Colombia, France, and later the United States controlled the territory surrounding the canal during construction. France began work on the canal in 1881, but stopped because of lack of investors' confidence due to engineering problems and a high worker mortality rate. The United States took over the project on May 4, 1904, and opened the canal on August 15, 1914. The US continued to control the canal and surrounding Panama Canal Zone until the 1977 Torrijos–Carter Treaties provided for handover to Panama. After a period of joint American–Panamanian control, the canal was taken over by the Panamanian government in 1999. It is now managed and operated by the government-owned Panama Canal Authority.

Canal locks at each end lift ships up to Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of excavation work required for the canal, 26 m (85 ft) above sea level, and then lower the ships at the other end. The original locks are 33.5 m (110 ft) wide. A third, wider lane of locks was constructed between September 2007 and May 2016. The expanded waterway began commercial operation on June 26, 2016. The new locks allow transit of larger, New Panamax ships.^[1]

Annual traffic has risen from about 1,000 ships in 1914, when the canal opened, to 14,702 vessels in 2008, for a total of 333.7 million Panama Canal/Universal Measurement System (PC/UMS) tons. By 2012, more than 815,000 vessels had passed through the canal.^[2] In 2017 it took ships an average of 11.38 hours to pass between the canal's two locks.^[3] The American Society of Civil Engineers has ranked the Panama Canal one of the seven wonders of the modern world.^[4]

HOW TO LOG THE VIRTUAL CACHE

In order to log the cache you will need to attach to your log a picture that fulfills these two requirements:

1. The picture needs to show yourself (your face is not required) or a personal item (e.g. your nickname on a piece of paper or gps)
2. The Miraflores locks need to be on the background of the picture

- Ticket prices are $17.22 for foreigners and $3 for locals and residents

El canal de Panamá¹​ es un Canal de navegación ubicado entre el mar Caribe y el océano Pacífico. Atraviesa el punto más estrecho del istmo de Panamá (82 km).²​

Considerado como una de las grandes obras de la ingeniería mundial del siglo XX,³​⁴​⁵​⁶​⁷​⁸​⁹​ el canal funciona a través de esclusas en cada extremo que elevan los barcos hasta el lago Gatún, un lago artificial creado para reducir la cantidad de trabajo requerido para la excavación del canal, a 27.5 metros sobre el nivel del mar, para después descenderlos hasta el nivel del Pacífico o el Atlántico. Antes de su apertura, los pasos naturales utilizados entre los océanos Atlántico y Pacífico eran el estrecho de Magallanes y el cabo de Hornos (entrando por el océano Pacífico, ubicados en el extremo austral de Chile) y desembocando en el mar Argentino (océano Atlántico).¹⁰​

Desde su inauguración el 15 de agosto de 1914, el canal ha conseguido acortar en tiempo y distancia la comunicación marítima, dinamizando el intercambio comercial y económico al proporcionar una vía de tránsito corta y relativamente barata¹¹​ entre los dos océanos, influyendo decisivamente en los patrones del comercio mundial,¹²​ impulsando el crecimiento económico de los países desarrollados y en vías de desarrollo,¹¹​ además de proporcionar el impulso básico para la expansión económica de muchas regiones remotas del mundo.¹³​¹⁴​¹⁵​ En 2012, Estados Unidos, China, Chile, Japón y Corea del Sur fueron los cinco principales usuarios del canal,¹⁶​ que lleva de ocho a diez horas cruzar.³​ El canal ampliado se inauguró en 2016, tras una década de obras.

CÓMO LOGEAR EL CACHÉ

Para poder logear el caché deberá de adjuntar a su log una foto que cumpla los siguientes dos requisitos:

1. Debe salir usted (no es necesario mostrar su cara) o un articulo personal como su nombre de usuario en un papel o su gps
2. La foto debe incluir las esclusas de miraflores en el fondo

INFORMACIÓN ÚTIL

- El centro de visitantes de las esclusas de miraflores abre de martes a domingo de 8:00am a 6:00pm.
- El costo de la entrada es de $10 para extranjeros y $3 para panameños y residentes
- Es muy recomendable que visiten el museo del centro de visitantes
