O Castelo de Silves é uma das mais notáveis obras de arquitetura militar Islmica entre nós, com mais de mil anos de existência.
Esta fortificação situa-se no ponto mais elevado da colina em que a cidade assenta. Forma um polígono irregular, rodeado por uma forte muralha em taipa, revestida com grés de Silves (arenito), material abundante na região e que lhe confere uma tonalidade avermelhada. Ocupa uma área total de cerca de 12.000m2. Profundamente devastado por inúmeros sismos, é objeto de obras de restauro na década de 40 do século XX, assumindo a sua traça atual através da intervenção promovida no âmbito dos Planos de Fomento.
Ainda no seu exterior, junto à entrada principal poderá encontrar uma escultura em bronze representativa do rei D. Sancho I, monarca que em 1189 conquistou pela primeira vez, com o auxílio dos Cruzados, a cidade de Silves aos árabes.
No interior do Castelo encontram-se vários elementos dignos de registo, dos quais se destaca o Aljibe, a grande cisterna de planta retangular que abastecia de água parte significativa da cidade.
A área urbana desenvolve-se pelas encostas nascente, sul e poente. As habitações definiam ruas íngremes e irregulares que se estendiam até ao rio Arade. Foi construído na extremidade nascente do topo de um cerro com 56 m de cota máxima, junto à margem direita deste rio, onde o casario era entrecortado por ruas íngremes e irregulares. Nos lados norte e levante da elevação referida, as encostas, muito inclinadas, proporcionavam boas condições naturais de defesa. O Castelo apresenta uma muralha com planta de forma poligonal irregular, composta por 4 torreões e 7 quadrelas, com ameias, ligados por uma cortina de muralhas com adarve, rematadas por ameias com seteiras, ocupando uma área plana.

This fortification is located on the highest point of the hill on which the city is based. It forms an irregular polygon, surrounded by a strong rammed earth wall, coated with Grés de Silves (sandstone), an abundant material in the region and which gives it a reddish hue. It occupies a total area of about 12,000m2. Deeply devastated by numerous earthquakes, it was the subject of restoration works in the 1940th, assuming its current design through the intervention carried out under the Development Plans.
Still outside, next to the main entrance, you can find a bronze sculpture representing King D. Sancho I, the monarch who in 1189 conquered for the first time, with the help of the Crusaders, the city of Silves from the Arabs.
Inside the Castle there are several noteworthy elements, of which the Aljibe stands out – a large rectangular cistern that supplied water to a significant part of the city.
The urban area develops along the east, south and west slopes. Dwellings defined steep and irregular streets that stretched to the Arade River. It was built at the east end of the top of a hill with a maximum elevation of 56 m, next to the right bank of this river, where the houses were intersected by steep and irregular streets. On the north and east sides of the aforementioned elevation, the slopes, very steep, provided good natural defense conditions. The Castle features a wall with an irregular polygonal plan, consisting of 4 turrets and 7 squares, with battlements, connected by a curtain of walls with a darve, topped by battlements with loopholes, occupying a flat area.
