How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Your log must have a photo attached which clearly shows your caching name on an object present at the honeycombs or your find WILL be DELETED.

Logging Requirement

To claim this virtual you must take a photograph at ground zero. The photograph must include

(a) The honeycombs

and

(b) Your caching name. Your name can be written, printed, embroidered, painted or displayed electronically on an object of your choice. Points will be awarded for creativity in how it is written but these points are not redeemable for prizes.

The chosen object displaying your name must be physically present when the photograph is taken  and not digitally added in afterwards.

You can choose yourself as the object but the requirement is still that you display your caching name on "the object".

If more than one cacher's name is in the photograph each cacher should attach a copy of the photograph with their log. Sorry about any duplications for a group but this is so I can quickly scan for missing photographs.

I believe the requirement for a single photograph as detailed above is a simple one yet I have to delete a couple of logs a month because there is either no photo or the requirement is not met. Please wait to log until you can upload the required photograph. Logs without the required photo will be deleted.

The Giants Causeway

The Giants Causeway is an area consisting of 40,000 interlocking basalt columns which stretch from the foot of the cliffs to the sea where they disappear beneath the waves. Most of these columns are hexagonal with the tallest being about 12m high. It was made a UNESCO world heritage site in 1986. The site is managed by the National Trust which has a visitor center (paid) and car park at the top of the access road. It is free to visit the causeway itself but parking is chargeable anywhere near the site.

The walk from the visitor center to the Honeycombs is about 1km. It is all downhill so its a lot more pleasant getting there than the return journey. There is a shuttle bus (paid) that operates between the visitor center and the honeycombs.

The causeway is not only about the honeycomb area. With the area subject to millions of years of weathering, there are other features which resemble objects. The Organ, the Giant's Boot, Giant's Eyes, the Shepherd's Steps, the Honeycomb, the Giant's Harp, the Chimney Stacks, the Giant's Gate and the Camel's Hump.

Access

As well as driving to the site, the area is well served by public transport and tours run from a number of locations in Ireland. Another option is the Giant's Causeway & Bushmills Railway. A train that runs from Bushmills (where there is free parking) up to quite near the visitor center. This is a paid service and seasonal in nature.

My prefered way to visit the site has always been to park at the Beach Road Carpark (free at time of writing) and walk the coastal route to the Causeway itself.
