Geocache Description:

Michigan Champion Giant Sequoia Sign

Sequoiadendron giganteum

or Giant Sequoia, are often referred to as the largest (by volume) living thing on earth. They feature thick, heavy limbs and can grow to 250 feet in height. The giant sequoia is a columnar (cone shaped) tree losing its lower limbs and becoming flat-topped as it ages. The natural range of these giants is located in the Western Sierra Nevada in California. The most famous locations of giant sequoia trees are Sequoia National Park and Giant Sequoia National Monument. However, in 1948/9, six trees were planted in Lake Bluff by Gertrude and Edward Gray. This Champion sequoia is over 95 feet tall.

Michigan is probably not the place one would expect to find a member of this species. Stand back and marvel at this giant.
