WELCOME TO HALLOWEENTOWN!
In 1998, Disney Channel descended on St. Helens and nearby Scappoose to film Halloweentown, a made-for-TV movie that later became something of a cult classic. Many scenes from this movie were filmed in this area, with the Columbia County Courthouse serving as the Halloweentown town hall and the plaza where this cache is located serving as the bus stop, among other things.
To celebrate this event, St. Helens hosts the Spirit of Halloweentown, a sort of fall festival celebrating Halloween from mid September to the end of October. You do not have to visit during this event to log the virtual, but it may be more fun if you do - especially if you love Halloween.
In the past, admission to the event has been free, but recently an admission charge has been collected. For updates on this, please see the Spirit of Halloweentown website (linked above). There is no cost to visit other times of the year.
Other films have been shot in this area, including Twilight, which gained a significant following. The plaza where you stand also has several informative boards discussing Lewis and Clark's visit to the region during their expedition in the early 19th Century.
Logging requirements:
Logging your find is easy. Simply find the rock column at/near the posted coords that has a small mostly orange image of Halloweentown with "Debbie Reynolds, Apr. 1 1932" inscribed below it. Take a picture of this with your written Geoname and add it to your log. This must be on a physical piece of paper. Logs with images of the column with your name added digitally will be removed. See the example image below the notes.
Some notes:
- You do not need to send me a message to log a find on this virtual cache.
- Every Geocacher in your party must attach their own picture to their log.
- You may include other pictures (including you in your Halloween costume if you wore one), but these are not required.
- If the rock column is inaccessible for whatever reason, you may take a picture of your written Geoname with the county courthouse in the background instead.
Thank you for visiting and happy caching!
