This “Berkshire" class 2-8-4 steam locomotive, the Nickel Plate Road 779 was built for the  NKP (New York, Chicago and St. Louis Railroad).

The locomotive was finished in May of 1949 and was the last new steam locomotive to be delivered to the Nickel Plate Road and is one of the last two of the 36 steam engines completed by Lima-Locomotive Works from 1947-1949, and was the final 2-8-4 locomotive on standard gauge completed in the world. It’s intended use was for fast freight service.

As of her retirement in early 1958, the locomotive had logged 677,095 miles.

In 1966, she was donated to the City of Lima and placed on display here in Lima’s Lincoln Park,
