O Palacete do Conde de Burnay, construído em finais do séc. XIX, integrava o vasto património imobiliário da família Burnay.
Apesar da sua origem, cedo este edifício abriu portas à comunidade e, na década de 30, albergou a Escola Comercial Ferreira Borges. Em 1961, esta escola testemunhou um dos mais marcantes acontecimentos ocorridos na Alcântara contemporânea.
Quase em frente à escola, na então Rua da Creche, é assassinado pela PIDE, o artista plástico e militante antifascista José Dias Coelho, imortalizado por Zeca Afonso na música “A morte saiu à rua” e no topónimo que renomeou a rua.
Atualmente, após obras de recuperação e beneficiação, é com muito orgulho que o nº 29 da Rua José Dias Coelho recebe agora a novíssima Biblioteca de Alcântara.
O projeto de reabilitação é da autoria da arquiteta Margarida Grácio Nunes e foi reconhecido com uma menção honrosa de melhor intervenção de impacto social do Prémio Nacional de Reabilitação Urbana 2020.
Esta é uma biblioteca feita por pessoas e para pessoas. Imbuídos pela história por detrás do nome da rua e pela essência do topónimo árabe Al-Quantara, que significa a ponte, símbolo de união, os responsáveis por este espaço começaram a partilhar ideias, projetos e desejos das pessoas sobre a biblioteca.
Ouviram, discutiram, sonharam em conjunto e o resultado é que mesmo antes da inauguração, a biblioteca já tinha um Teatro Comunitário. Para além do Teatro Comunitário, a Biblioteca de Alcântara tem um Coro Infantil/Juvenil, desenvolve também o projeto “Vidas e Memórias de Alcântara” (dispondo de uma sala onde se pode encontrar uma coleção dedicada exclusivamente a Lisboa e a Alcântara) e possui ainda uma Galeria que acolhe exposições temporárias de variados artistas e temas. O espaço pretende ser a Casa da Cidadania. A casa e o jardim! Sim, porque esta casa tem um jardim onde nos poderemos deixar embalar pelo som da velha fonte de pedra, minuciosamente decorada com conchas, inebriar pelo aroma da alfazema e do jasmim, ou descobrir a magia para lá dos espelhos da escultura de Pedro Croft.

The Palace of the Earl of Burnay, built at the end of the 19th century. 19th century, was part of the burnay family's vast real estate heritage.
Despite its origin, this building soon opened doors to the community and, in the 1930s, housed the Ferreira Borges Commercial School. In 1961, this school witnessed one of the most remarkable events that occurred in contemporary Alcântara. Almost in front of the school, in the then Creche Street, is murdered by PIDE, the artist and antifascist militant José Dias Coelho, immortalized by Zeca Afonso in the song "Death went out to the street" and in the toponym that renamed the street. Currently, after recovery and improvement works, it is with great pride that the number 29 of Rua José Dias Coelho now receives the brand new Library of Alcântara.
The rehabilitation project is authored by the architect Margarida Grácio Nunes and was recognized with an honorable mention of best social impact intervention of the National Urban Rehabilitation Award 2020. This is a library made by people and for people. Imbued with the history behind the street name and the essence of the Arabic toponym Al-Quantara, which means the bridge, symbol of unity, those responsible for this space began to share ideas, projects and desires of the people about the library.
They heard, argued, dreamed together and the result is that even before the inauguration, the library already had a Community Theater. The space aims to be the House of Citizenship. The house and the garden! Yes, because this house has a garden where we can let ourselves be lulled by the sound of the old stone fountain, minutely decorated with shells, inebriate by the aroma of lavender and jasmine, or discover the magic beyond the mirrors of the sculpture of Peter Croft.
In addition to the Community Theatre, the Alcântara Library has a Children's/Youth Choir, also develops the project "Vidas e Memórias de Alcântara" (with a room where you can find a collection dedicated exclusively to Lisbon and Alcântara) and also has a Gallery that hosts temporary exhibitions of various artists and themes.
