Geocache Description:

About Village Sign Caches

This cache belongs to the Village Sign Series, a series of caches based on ornate signs that depict the heritage, history and culture of the villages that put them up (generally on the village green!).

The signs can be made of different materials from fibreglass to wood, from forged steel to stone. They can depict anything from local industry to historical events. The tradition probably started in Norfolk or Suffolk and has now spread across most of the country so we thought we would base a series on them!

More information and statistics can be found at the Village Signs Website - https://www.villagesignseries.co.uk

Cringleford village existed here at least as early as Saxon times and there is evidence of human settlement in the area from Roman times and the Bronze Age.

The place-name 'Cringleford' is first attested in 1043 or 1044, where it appears as Cringelforth. In the Domesday Book of 1086 it appears as Kringelforda. The name means 'ford by the round hill'. The first element may be Scandinavian, as Old Norse kringla means 'a circle'

The size of the village is 4.04 square kilometres (1.56 sq mi) and the population of the village (including Intwood) at the time of the 2011 UK census was 2963. The population is likely to increase as a result of the current process of suburbanisation, with new housing development and improved transport links. Lying close to the city of Norwich the village has become popular with commuters

A puzzle with a magnetic final which can be found at  N07.81.726 E556.69.802    Clearly not the final co-ordinates as printed here - its unlikely that Julius Caesar visited Cringleford, but he could help you here?

If anybody would like to expand the Village Sign Series, please do. I would ask that you request a number for your cache first by filling in the new request form on the Village Sign Series website villagesignseries.co.uk https://www.villagesignseries.co.uk so we can keep track of the Village Sign numbers and names to avoid duplication.
