Weet je dat je bovenop de IJtunnel staat?
Onder je voeten verbindt de IJtunnel Amsterdam-Noord met het Centrum. De A10 is via de Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg (S116) en de IJtunnel verbonden met de Valkenburgerstraat en Prins Hendrikkade. De tunnel is in 1968 geopend door koningin Juliana, hij loopt onder het IJ en het Oosterdok door en is veruit de belangrijkste tunnel in Nederland.
Het Oost Europese uiterlijk van de tunnel is het gevolg van een renovatie in 2012, waarbij de tunnel werd ontdaan van zijn prachtige uiterlijk door de emaille beplating te verwijderen. Wat overbleef waren de bunkerachtige wanden en het plafond en menig buitenlandse toerist zal als hij naar binnen rijdt denken “waarom zijn we eigenlijk niet naar Brussel gegaan?”.
Het gesloten deel van de tunnel is 1148 meter lang, bestaat uit twee buizen met ieder 2 rijstroken autoweg en de tunnel is een stadstunnel, evenals de Piet Heintunnel, de Michiel de Ruytertunnel, de Spaarndammertunnel en de Arenatunnel. Verkeerscentrale Amsterdam is verantwoordelijk voor de dagelijkse bediening, de veiligheid en de verkeersdoorstroom.
Waar nu het NEMO Science Museum staat, hing vroeger een metalen lichtrooster, waardoor de ogen van bestuurders aan de wisselende lichtomstandigheden in- en buiten de tunnel konden wennen. Dat schijnt tegenwoordig geen probleem meer te zijn, hoewel je in Noord nog wel zo'n lichtrooster vindt.

Beneath your feet, the IJtunnel connects the north of Amsterdam to the city centre.
Highway A10 is connected by the Nieuwe Leeuwarderweg (S116) and the IJtunnel to the Valkenburgstraat and Prins Hendrikkade.
The tunnel was opened in 1968 by queen Juliana, it runs underneath the IJ and the Oosterdok and is by far the most important tunnel in the Netherlands.
Its Eastern European appearance is a result of the 2012 renovation, during which it was stripped of all its splendor by removing its enamel plating. What remained were its bunker-like walls and ceiling and on entering the tunnel, many foreign tourists may wonder “why on earth didn't we go to Brussels?”.
The enclosed part is 1148 meters long, it consists of two tunnel tubes with dual carriageway and it is a city-tunnel, just like the Piet Heintunnel, the Michiel de Ruytertunnel, the Spaarndammertunnel and the Arenatunnel. Traffic Centre Amsterdam is responsible for its daily operation, safety and its traffic flow.
At the present location of NEMO Science Museum there used to be a metal grid, which allowed drivers to adjust their eyes from tunnel lighting to daylight conditions and vice versa. Strangely, that no longer seems to be a problem, although you'll still find a grid on the northern side.
