Em 1704, Alexander Selkirk, da Escócia, trabalhava em um navio que navegava para o oeste da América do Sul. Depois de uma tempestade, o navio parou em uma ilha desabitada para reabastecer e também precisava ser consertado. Mas o capitão queria partir rapidamente, sem consertar. O Alexander Selkirk temia que o navio afundasse, e ele optou por ficar na ilha. Ele tinha 28 anos. Felizmente, ele conseguiu ter leite e carne de cabras que viviam soltas na ilha, do navios anteriores.

Em 1709 depois de 4 anos e 4 meses, um navio finalmente veio e o descobriu ele. Alexander Selkirk era então super atlético da vida difícil e impressionou por poder pegar cabras grátis todos os dias para curar os membros do navio que estavam doentes com escorbuto mortal. Ele soube que o navio que havia abandonado havia afundado e todos nele morreram. Alexander Selkirk contou como sobreviveu sozinho e o jornal escreveu sobre ele. Em 1712 o jornal escreveu uma história detalhada sobre o que ele havia sofrido, e ele se tornou famoso.

Então, em 1719, Daniel Defoe escreveu uma história sobre como um "Robinson Crusoe" sobreviveu 28 anos em uma ilha isolada no Caribe mais tropical, e este livro se tornou um clássico.

In 1704 Alexander Selkirk from Scotland was working on a ship that sailed west of Sout America. After a storm the ship stopped at an uninhabited island to resupply, and it also needed to be repaired. But the captain wanted to leave quickly without doing the repairs. Alexander Selkirk was afraid the ship would sink so he chose to remain on the uninhabited island. He was 28 years old. Luckily he could get milk and meat from runaway goats from earlier ship.

 In 1709 after 4 years and 4 months a ship finally came and discovered him. Alexander Selkirk was then super athletic from the hard life, and he impressed by being able to catch free goats every day to cure the members on the ship that were sick with deadly scurvy. He learnt that the ship he had abandoned had sunk and everybody on it had died. In 1712 the newspaper wrote about him and he became famous.

Then in 1719 Daniel Defoe wrote a story about how a "Robinson Crusoe" survived 28 years on an isolated island in the more tropical Carribian, and this book has become a classic.
